Community College's Enterprise Arm Launches Unique Software Development Firm
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. enterprise arm of Central New
Mexico Community College (CNM), has turned a successful software
development operation created to provide coding students with real
commercial work experience into an independent software development
firm, Ingenuity Software Labs (ISL). CNM is the lead investor in ISL,
an innovative endeavor for U.S. community colleges.
ISL will leverage Albuquerque as the best value
for software development in the U.S. due to its low cost of doing
business, abundant tech talent and high-performing coding graduates.
The unique public-private partnership will tap into the $50 billion
software development outsourcing market for U.S. firms – ISL aims
to keep more of that work in the U.S.
CNM Ingenuity, Inc., established by CNM in 2014,
was founded to spark more economic development in New Mexico and to
create new revenue streams for the college in an era of
ever-decreasing state funding. The Deep Dive Coding Bootcamp was the
first program launched under CNM Ingenuity. It's an intensive
10-week, 40 hours per week program that teaches students the skills
needed SOFTWARE
DEVELOPMENT, websites and apps. Deep Dive places over 80
percent of its graduates into coding-related jobs with an average
starting salary in the Albuquerque area of $45,000 per year (salaries
higher in bigger cities).
As Deep Dive Coding graduated more students, CNM
Ingenuity started Ingenuity Software Labs under its umbrella in 2015
to pursue revenue-generating contracts with local organizations to
provide students with paid internships while also meeting a
high-demand need for coders locally. Prior to becoming independent
this week, ISL managed projects for private and public organizations,
government entities and non-profits. Projects were led by a senior
developer guiding the work of coding grads. Core technologies
included full-stack development with Microsoft .Net, MySQL, PHP,
Javascript and other modern tools.
Now an independent business, ISL is guided by
experienced leadership – CEO and President John Mierzwa, founder of
Deep Dive Coding Bootcamp, and COO Lisa J. Adkins, also COO of
FatPipe ABQ and the The BioScience Center. They're supported by
experienced developers with a pipeline of high-performing coding
grads. ISL provides development services, including custom software
and mobile app development, web design and development, and strategic
consultation. ISL has extensive expertise with Microsoft
applications, open source technologies, business process automation
software, and business analytics.
"Ingenuity Software Labs already has a great
story, but we're just getting started," said Mierzwa. "We
have the resources, the vision and the talent to build a great
national software development firm that will create more jobs in the
U.S. while also benefitting our New Mexico economy, our local
community college and our coding students."
Nick Truyol, CEO of Sabio Systems, is also an
investor. Advisors for ISL include Stuart Rose, serial entrepreneur
and angel investor, and Mark Fidel, co-founder of RiskSense, a
leading national cybersecurity firm.
